Question: Why is there a gap in my rod?
Answer: Rods which have a single taper, such
as the WT and 5-piece LT, use this type of ferrule design to insure proper
energy transfer through the rod. Without this gap the caster would feel
a hinge or flat spot in the rod. Because of the design characteristics
in a single taper rod, each ferrule is basically a graphite version of
the mandrel that part was rolled on. This means the ferrule itself contains
the exact same taper and diameter and the blank it's inserted into resulting
in perfect fit. Over years of use this gap will eventually wear, meaning
proper fit will be lost. Once this occurs simply return the rod to our
repair department for inspection and ferrule replacement. We'll replace
the ferrule and return it at no charge (except shipping).

Question: Should I use wax on my ferrules?
Answer: There is no right or wrong answer to
this question. Many experienced flyfishers insist on this practice. Also,
many experienced flyfishers insist against this practice. If the wax is
applied and then cleaned after every other use on a consistent basis then
we believe this can extend the life of the ferrule. Otherwise, the wax
simply attracts dust and grime and can actually shorten the life of the
ferrule.

Question: What kind of line should I use on
my Winston rod?
Answer: Fly line is really a matter of personal
preference. There are many specific choices available for all types of
fishing applications. It isn't possible for us to try them all when we
design a rod but we can explain the guidelines used for each model. These
guidelines do not mean this is a preferred line for the rod. We simply
used the same line for consistency in the design stage.

Question: How do I care for my Winston rod?
1) Never put your rod back in the tube wet.
The finish may be damaged and you'll shorten the life of the wraps. Simply
clean the rod off with a soft cloth and allow to dry.
2) Don't try to force ferrules together; internal
spigot ferrules are designed to have a gap that allows for future wear.
A nice, snug fit is what you're looking for. With sleeve ferrules, rubbing
a little paraffin wax on the male end can help.
3) When not in use, always store your rod in
the tube. Almost all of the rods we repair are victims of car doors and
windows.
