How long should my movies be?

Movies should not be longer than ten minutes. The ideal length is between 1-5 minutes. Remember also that with the 25 MB limit, the quality of your movie will go down the longer it is over 5 minutes. In very rare circumstances we will consider broadcasting a movie longer than 10 minutes if it is especially compelling. Examples: a) Steven Spielberg makes a flyfishing movie; b) New flyfishing footage from Lawrence of Arabia is discovered and the producers ask us to broadcast the entire uncut version; c) Professionally-made longer format films (ok to submit); d) we change our minds.

Will my movie definitely be selected to play on Annual Film Festival?

Not definitely, but 99.9% certain if it contains flyfishing footage and meets the criteria for submission (below). Odds go up even higher if we like you and you've already submitted great stuff.

How long will my movie remain on Annual Film Festival?

Your movie will stay up on our site until you tell us to take it down. We may reformat the site from time to time in which case the movies may be rearranged or even removed, but at present, we have no plans to remove movies, just to add them. If you do decide you'd no longer like your movie to appear on the site, simply send an email to info@winstonrods.com It may take a week or so before we remove it as it's more difficult to remove a movie and reshuffle the layout than it is to add one.

Will my computer be tied up for hours uploading my movie?

We hope not. Upload speeds will vary according to a variety of factors such as your broadband connection, the amount of traffic on our site or on the web in general, other users uploading at the same time, etc. Under normal conditions, however, it shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes for a 1 MB file to upload on a good broadband connection. As a rule of thumb, it should take about 3-6 minutes per 1 MB. For the largest movie of 25 MB, therefore, you should plan on it taking between 75-150 minutes. You can see why we limited the file size to 25 MB. This will usually slow down (but not eliminate completely) your ability to do other things over the web, so you may want to upload over your lunch break. If you're having trouble, it's really too big, or you simply would rather not upload it, go ahead and send it via mail.

What about Dial-up?

Don't upload large files if you only have a dial-up connection. Just mail them to us - it will save everyone a lot of time.

Can I upload several movies? How many is too many?

Go for it! As long as each movie is different and interesting, viewers will watch your movies. Of course, one of the reasons we have basic selection criteria is to filter out really bad stuff to keep the viewing experience positive and keep viewers coming back.

Who are we and why do we exist?

Assuming that you are asking about Annual Film Festival and not that you are a student of Heidegger, the answer is simple: Annual Film Festival was created by the Winston Rod Company to provide: a creative outlet for filmmakers, like us, with a passion for flyfishing; a free and entertaining forum for anglers to indulge their addiction to flyfishing without leaving the office or the house; an attempt at helping nonanglers begin to understand how we can disappear for days or even weeks at a time and always come back with smiles on our faces; ok – here is the Heidegger answer (from Wikipedia)... in his quest to pioneer the path by which we might learn how to meaningfully ask the question of the meaning of being, [Heidegger] distinguishes between different modes of being, which are present-at-hand or objectively present (the kind of being possessed by objects), ready-to-hand, which is the kind of being possessed by tools, and Da-sein ("there-being"), which is the kind of being possessed by the beings which...forget it.

Will you have "featured" movies?

Yes – we will have a festival winners section on the site where we will highlight the award winners from each of the festival periods. We also expect to come up with a clever way to let viewers know if certain movies are particularly good.

Music, film, photo, other copyright issues?

One of the conditions of submitting a movie to Annual Film Festival is that those submitting movies confirm that they have all the proper copyright permissions to the content they submit. Basically, if you don't have permission, don't use it and don't submit it. If we receive formal notification that a movie is in possible violation of copyright, we will remove the movie from the site.
