Two Handed Rods

Boron IIx Two-Handed rods, made with our second-generation boron/graphite composite, are the lightest spey rods in the world and offer extraordinary power, responsiveness and accuracy. Our Boron II-MX Two-Handed rods are slightly faster than our Boron IIx Two-Handed series. The Boron II-MX Two-Handed rods will easily load the newer, shorter-head fly lines yet remain responsive to the angler in tight surroundings. Boron II-MX Two-Handed rods are ideal for a variety of situations on salmon or steelhead waters and are perfect for the angler looking to fish a switch rod.

Our Boron IIx and our Boron II-MX Two-Handed rods, made with our second-generation boron/graphite composite, are the lightest spey rods in the world and offer extraordinary power, responsiveness, and accuracy. These rods were created with the help of our technical advisor Andre Scholz, one of the world's top spey casters. All our Two-Handed rods come with a copy of our educational DVD, "Introduction to Spey Casting with Andre Scholz."

Fly Rod Reviews

12'6" - 6/7-weight

"I have always been a little skeptical of the switch-rod market as I believe anglers should learn the fundamentals of spey casting before they are handed something too easy to cast. Herein lies the beauty of the new 12'6" 6-wt. BIIx. It allows me to teach most of the common spey casts, Double Spey, Snap T, Single Spey, and the Poke, accentuating the feel and skills so they can be transferred to a longer, more traditional rod down the road. The rod is so supple and sensitive, most can feel everything they need to very quickly and without tiring. Then I open the floodgates and show them more dynamic casting strokes with slightly heavier grain heads and hold my breath. Most common first words are Holy S--t!! And they are usually that way because they either can't believe how easy this is or because they are really pissed they bought the rod they did.

"For me personally, I recognize the ability this rod has to be a considerable workhorse, but why do it, that is what the larger rods are for. It is simply a pleasure to cast waking or wet summer flies with a Scandi head. Close your eyes and just feel the rod make each cast with effortless perfection. With the risk of sounding sappy, I'll say it is quite euphoric!"

11'6" - 6/7-weight

"My favorite choice for swinging classic steelhead patterns on the tight confines of the Trinity River in California is the 11'6" Winston BII-MX 6-weight. This rod, paired with a 420-grain Compact Scandinavian floating line is the perfect spey casting solution for this river. This rod fires long accurate casts with a small "D" loop and the lightness in hand (5 oz) makes fishing for the "fish of a thousand casts" possible with a minimum of physical effort. For steelhead from 4 to 14 lbs, the Winston BII-MX 6-weight 11' 6" is an awesome stick!"

12'3" - 7/8-weight

"Just finally got to spend some time with a couple of the new switch rods on the water and I find myself in the same ole situation, daughters' education or couple new rods?"

"The BII-MX 12'3" 7/8-wt. is simply divine. Every one of us who cast it knew it in less than three casts and we actually nearly went to blows trying to get our hands on it for the rest of the day. I was skeptical without question of this rod, already owning 6-, 8-,10- and 12-wt. BII-MXs. I was worried it would be too stiff, simply not the case at all. Andre has done a superb job of helping refine and complete a great set of shorter spey/switch rods. Get out and try them if you can. We will have a number of them available to our clients this season, starting as soon as possible."

"A 540-grain compact Skagit does it and for those guys out there as guides or shop owners who have not heard about the new Airflo Compact Skagit Kit, better either call Rajeff Sports now or get ahold of your rep because it is a must have. Every single grain weight of heads available, two Ridge running lines and space for two reels in a nice compact briefcase. All heads are color coded with a waterproof chart. Simply the best idea out there for helping figure out what line for what rod on personal, and more important, on clients' rods who are having trouble when they show up."

13'3" - 7/8-weight

"We often say in the business of Steelhead Fishing that you are dealing with hours of boredom interrupted by minutes of chaos! That all changed the day I put Winston's new 13'3 Spey Rod in my hands. In an instant I became enamored with Spey Casting again like I hadn't been in a very long time. Winston's coupling of master craftsmanship with raw unhindered power, in my mind, has resulted in the creation of the best Spey Rod ever built. When coupled with one of Airflows Compact Skagit lines, hitting the far bank is no longer a dream. It's a reality!"
